Emily of New Moon
Okay, so it’s no secret that I love the Anne of Green Gables series. I’ve openly admitted on this blog that if I could marry one literary character, it would be Gilbert Blythe. No one is arguing this point. So imagine my delight when I discovered another series by the genius L.M. Montgomery! This is the first book in that series, which is only three books long. It’s about, you guessed it, a quirky orphan named Emily. It’s a really sweet story and I loved this book. It feeds the literary part of my soul in such a satisfying way. SO glad to be reading more from the brilliant mind behind Anne of Green Gables. Visiting P.E. Island is totes on my bucket list.
The Alchemist
This book claims it will change your life. I’m not sure that it lives up to that statement, but it was pretty good. It’s more of a philosophical novel, but, that being said, it was pretty easy to follow and not hard to get through at all. It’s about figuring out your personal legend and following through until you’ve achieved that legend. It’s a very universalist type of philosophy, so that was interesting as well. I enjoyed this book, so if you weren’t sure about it I’d just say go for it. It’s short enough, so if you hate it, that’s not too much time wasted.
Minding Frankie
So, at the library last week, I discovered that one of my favorite authors had a new book out. I went nuts. Her new book was amazing. I loved the characters and the stories and how each person interacted with their world. This story is about a man who must raise a child alone. The mother died during the baby’s birth and now this recovering alcoholic and the giant support system that has been created must prove that the environment they formed is what is in the child’s best interest. The social worker assigned to the case is just waiting for them to mess up. I loved this book.
I got a library card yesterday. I totally nerded out in the library and walked out with a huge smile on my face and 4 new books to read. Good day? I’d say yes.
The Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place
This is a fun read about a girl who fought peer pressure and won. She values individual thought and ingenuity and I loved this story. The protagonist is witty and smart. She isn’t afraid to fight for what she believes in. Plus, her middle name is Rose and in the book she gets a rose painted on her ceiling. I love roses. A lot.
Rose Daughter
One of my favorites. I mean, really, who doesn’t love Beauty and the Beast? And who wouldn’t love a story that has more character development and growth than Disney? The end of this particular Beauty and the Beast tale is what makes this one my favorite. What is so special about the ending? Ha! Like I would tell you that. I hate spoiling books for other people. You’ll just have to read it for yourself.
The Cry of the Icemark
I picked this book up just for something to read. I got this book in middle school and loved it. I forgot about just how much I loved it. It’s full of action and intense battle scenes. There are werewolves and vampires (real monsters, not the pansified versions from Twilight) as well as giant snow leopards. The blind arrogance of the villain just makes me laugh. Good times, Icemark, good times.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
The book, not the movie. I haven’t seen the movie and I don’t know if I will. The book was amazing and I’d rather not be disappointed by a movie that doesn’t keep the integrity of the book. This book is written from a unique perspective and has a story within a story, which is always fun. I loved it. You should read it. Now. Go.
